  • Originally known as School House, the building was constructed in 1911 and stands as Appleby's oldest building and served as the main school building that included a residence, classrooms, reading room and a dining room. The building architects were Peden and McLaren of Montreal and the contractors were Byers and Anglin of Montreal. The building was renamed in 1949, followign the death of Thomas B. Colley, its housemaster and a teacher of Classics at Appleby for 35 years. It is now a residence for boys.

The covered rink, which collapsed in January 1945, does not appear to be in the photograph. The flag pole is visible as are several student throwing a football around.

          Item consists of the first Appleby college Prospectus recruitment brochure. It includes an architect's sketch of School House (now Colley House), the beach, the playing fields, and the creek. It discusses the school grounds, the equipment, the staff, the courses of study, religious instruction, rules and regulations, sport opportunities, outlines fees, uniform requirements and application form.

          Sub-series consists of a ledger book with an early written record describing the establishment of the school from 1911 to 1915, including when the following buildings were constructed: the School House (now Colley House), Headmaster's House, the hospital (infirmary), the chemical laboratory, ice rink and opening of Second House (Powell's House), when McCraney Farm leased. It records the fire of the original gym and stable and the building of the new barn and gym. It also lists when the school opened and the names of the original teachers, staff and students. It records when staff and faculty resigned and when students left the school. It lists the names and dates of the Appleby Dramatic Club productions. It records the first Prizegiving Ceremony and Sports Day and the establishment of the Cadet Corps. It also records when faculty, staff, students and alumni signed up for military positions during the start of World War I. Finally, it records the purchase of the new billiard table for School House by Sir Edmund Walker.

          There is a single page towards the back of the ledger with lists the names of students who are in the school picture taken Apr. 29, 1919. It also includes the city where they are from and their nickname or preferred name.

          The Prospectus brochure also includes photographs of the temporary residence (McCraney House), the hospital or infirmary, the science laboratory building, Headmaster's residence, the Lodge - Faculty residence, playing fields, the hockey rink, and the 1913 Prefects. It discusses the barn fire in November 1913 and the plans for construction of new barn, stables and separate gymnasium building. The brochure also discusses "Mr. Powell's House", the temporary dormitory located in the McCraney House across the street from the school.

          Item consists of a black and white panoramic photograph in four photos of the Appleby College Campus around 1914. There does not appear to be a barn in the photograph, which means it was taken after the barn fire of November 1913, but before the new barn was built. Also in the photograph is School House (now Colley House), and the Headmaster's house, which was built in the summer of 1913. There are other farm buildings in the picture as well.

          File consists of biographical information about Thomas B. Colley, who was a teacher at Appleby from 1914-1915 and again from 1919 to 1949. He was House Master of School House and the building was renamed Colley House in his honour upon his death in 1949.

          File includes correspondence between Mr. Guest and Thomas Colley regarding employment contracts and wages, as well as housing. There is also correspondence upon the death of Thomas Colley and his estate.

It includes articles about Cadets, gymnastics, Sports Day, Closing Day, the Chapel, the death of Sir Edmund Walker - the co-founder of the school (oversized encapsulation), Track and Field, a fire at Appleby during the 1930's, the death of Samuel Clarke, the hanging of the new Canadian flag on campus, 55th anniversary of Appleby College, the retirement of Headmaster Dr. J.A.M. Bell, football, rugby, various guest speakers to the school.

          Sub-series also includes an article by Wilder Breckenridge about what it was like at the school when it first opened in 1911; articles about the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the building campaign including a new hospital and library; the introduction of girls from St. Mildred's Lightbourn School participating in the school plays at Appleby beginning in 1971; and what is like at a private school. Sketches include the following: Main Doorway of Appleby School; Door to chapel; Chapel and Schoolhouse (now Colley House) from the drive; Interior of the chapel; Powell's House and School House (now Colley House); Powell's House from the tennis court; view from the playing field which shows part of Powell's House and the chapel.

          Mr. Payne (1890 - 1983) was a well-known Canadian artist created this souvenir book for the school in 1930-1931. The cost of the book at the time was $3 and the school had 100 copies of the book made. See article on pgs. 33-34 of the Feb. 1931 Argus.

          Item consists of a movie about the 1932 Appleby School Travel Club European Tour. The tour group travelled to England, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany. The group toured many castles and schools, as well as World War 1 sites, including Ypres.

          Included in the footage are scenes from Appleby College, including Colley House Residence, Powell's House Residence, the Headmaster's House and the Covered Rink, cricket team, gymnastics, physical training for both junior and senior classes, tennis courts, the chapel and the college campus.

          A shot list outlining the trip is included.

It discusses the history of Appleby College, Sir Edmund Walker, John Guest, Major Vernon Harcourt de Butts Powell, the founding of the school, the different buildings on campus including Powell's House, School House (now Colley House), the chapel, the barn, the covered ice rink, cadets, gymnastics, Sports day as well as academics.

          Item consists of the 1941 Appleby College Prospectus brochure. This is the first time Appleby College name is used on the brochure. The brochure includes an aerial photograph of the school grounds, photographs of School House (now Colley House), the chapel, Powell's House, the recreation room, dining hall, science laboratories, dorm rooms, football, hockey, track and field, tennis and golf, cadets, Sports Day, gym class.

          It also discusses the fee structure, courses, medical care, cadets, physical training and the facilities.
