Annual Closing Day

Sub-series consists of records pertaining to the Annual Closing Day / Graduation at Appleby College and is comprised of the following files: Programmes and Prize Lists, Invitations, Closing Day Speeches, Bookplates for Annual Prize Giving, Graduation Ball/Leaving Class dinner.

Annual Fund award

Item consists of a black and white photograph of the presentation of the Annual Fund award. Note on verso: "David Smith '53 (left) accepts the award on behalf of his class for the highest Participation in the Annual Fund from Lyndon Fournier '78." This event was described in The Appleby Quarterly (July 1993, vol. 15, no. 1).

Annual Games Day/Sports Day

File consists of records pertaining to the Annual Games/ Sports Day at Appleby College. The programs also contain the awards and prizes given to during the Annual Prizegiving Ceremony, which was held after the games. These were also known as prize lists.

File also consists of the invitations for attending the annual sports day and prizegiving ceremony. These invitations often list the guest of honour who is presenting the awards to students.

File also consists of a field measurement log book which belonged to David "Digger Smith". There are also final scorebooks/ledger books for each of the events. In the 1980-1988 ledger book are also programmes for the years between 1982 and 1988.

Athletics pin

Item consists of an athletic pin with the letter 'A' in the center, given to John as an award.

Awards

File consists of records pertaining to awards given to students on Closing Day. It includes blank Optimates award certificates which are signed by Headmaster Guy McLean. Optimates Award was given to students who achieved outstanding academic standing.

Awards and Recognition

Sub-series consists of awards, certificates and trophies and other gifts as an award and recognition to Appleby College for community involvement, donations and sports related activities.

It includes certificates from the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Waterfront Festival, The Navy League of Canada, Tour East Holiday Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, Girls Soccer Varsity Award for international tournament, and the Town of Oakville.

File consists of records pertaining to boxing at Appleby College and includes correspondence about trophies as well as boxing results and an invitation to the 1935 tournament.

File includes 1 photograph of Sarge Bailey teaching two young boys in the boxing ring.

Closing Day, 1996

Item consists of a colour photograph of a table displaying many trophies and awards to be distributed at the Closing Day ceremony on the Appleby College campus. This event was described in The Argus Yearbook (1996), The Appleby Quarterly (July 1996, vol. 18, no. 2), and The Whippet (September 1996, no. 39).

Football Cufflinks

Item consists of a pair of cuff links. The cuff links are capped with a colour enamel Appleby College crest; on one link is engraved '1971' and the other '1976'. This gift was presented to John by his coach David 'Digger' Smith upon the completion of his final football season at Appleby. His football career began in grade 9 with the Under 15 team. In grade 10, John was selected to play on the First Team. He captained his last two years.

Gold Opimates pin

Item consists of a push pin featuring the school's mascot the greyhound inside a circle. This was an academic award given in 1975-1976 to John for participating in Optimates.

Graduating Class 2020 Care Package

File consists of records pertaining to the care package created for the Appleby College Graduating Class of 2020, as a result of the COVID pandemic which cancelled the Annual Closing Day Ceremonies. The care package was mailed to all graduating students at Appleby College and a small sign, a blue graduation cap with the year 2020 on the tassles, two black Appleby College cloth face masks, a brochure about photos and class rings for 2020, several COVID related stickers including a picture of a blue dog with a mask on, a picture of toilet paper with the words '2020 survivor', and an ape with the words 'Social Distancing Expert'. There is also an invitation from the Senior School Council for the Appleby College Prom to be held Saturday October 10, 2020, as well as a invitation for the Closing Day Ceremony to be held Friday October 9, 2020. The package also includes two blank monthly calendar templates. There is also a colour picture of the graduating class of 2020 (PH01-0909).

Invitations

File consists of the invitations for the Annual Closing Day and Prizegiving ceremonies at Appleby College.

Lieutenant Governor Award

Series consists of a letter addressed to John letting him know he has won the Lieutenant-Governor's Silver Medal award. The series also includes the award pin.

Martin Baggaley

Item consists of a colour photograph of Martin Baggaley (class of 1979) receiving the Gulf and Kuwait Medal and Bar for service in the Persian Gulf War. This event was described in The Appleby Quarterly (April 1992, vol. 14, no. 1).

Newspaper Clippings

Sub-series consists of newspaper clippings about Appleby College and is divided into decades. It includes articles about Cadets, gymnastics, Sports Day, Closing Day, the Chapel, the death of Sir Edmund Walker - the co-founder of the school (oversized encapsulation), Track and Field, a fire at Appleby during the 1930's, the death of Samuel Clarke, the hanging of the new Canadian flag on campus, 55th anniversary of Appleby College, the retirement of Headmaster Dr. J.A.M. Bell, football, rugby, various guest speakers to the school.

Sub-series also includes an article by Wilder Breckenridge about what it was like at the school when it first opened in 1911; articles about the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the building campaign including a new hospital and library; the introduction of girls from St. Mildred's Lightbourn School participating in the school plays at Appleby beginning in 1971; and what is like at a private school. There are articles about various school dramatic plays; swimming; squash teams; the suspension of a student for not following chapel protocol; 50 years of service for head chef Hilda Chattaway; student scholarships and graduating students attending MIT; accidents outside of the school on Lakeshore Road; the grand reopening of the renovated Colley House; Hockey; Cricket.

Peter Thompson; Women's Association annual meeting; Cadet inspection; Prizegiving Ceremony and Annual Sports Day; cricket results; Capt. L.G. Ostrom and Major C.R. Ostrom receive promotions during World War II.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs taken during Stafford's time at Appleby between 1924 and 1933 and consists of buildings on campus, friends, cadets, Sports Day, Prize Giving ceremonies, prefects, and sports team photos.

Pin - Tribe Award

Item consists of 6 metal pins with a picture of a tent, "Appleby College Tribe Award".

In the Fall of 1998, Appleby staff, students and teachers organized into six nations - Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Senaca and Tuscarora as part of a new Tribal system within the school for a variety of different events and tribal competitions.
