Item consists of a colour photograph of Modern Languages teacher Kathleen Manneke. Note on verso: "Appleby is pleased to welcome Kathleen Manneke to its Modern Languages department. Her teaching load includes courses in German, French and Latin, and she is involved in novice skating. Well-qualified for her new position, Kathleen has an Honours B.A. in German and Classical Civilization and a M.A. in Classical Studies from McMaster University, and a B.Ed. from Toronto. She has taught German and French for the Durham Board of Education for the past seven years, and has also spent a considerable amount of time studying abroad in Italy and West Germany. She also worked for two seasons as an archaeologist doing field surveys in sites in Southern Italy. Most recently, she has been an historical interpreter and teacher at the Museum of Montgomery's Inn in Etobicoke. Travelling is one of her major interests, and she has been to virtually every country in Europe at least once. Kathleen is also a strong supporter of student exchanges, and has acted as a teacher/chaperon of several tours, including one to the Soviet Union in 1988. She was a member of the Classical Association of Canada from 1979 until 1988, and includes dance, theatre and photography among her hobbies. She is also interested in Nineteenth Century quilt and bedcovering design, research and reproduction." This event was described in The Appleby Quarterly (December 1990).

Coming to us from St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Brian has a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Waterloo and a B.Ed. from Western. Heavily involved in coaching swimming, football, white-water kayaking, canoeing and downhill skiing at St. Andrew's, he was Head of their Mathematics department, taught several Physics and Computer Science courses, was Housemaster in one of their residences and served as Commanding Officer of their Cadet Corps for one year. But he won't need to worry about spending all of his time in the classroom - he has already signed up to help with Outdoor Pursuits and the senior Swimming programme. And Brian, along with his wife Catherine (who will be joining the Appleby staff next Fall), is the new assistant Housemaster in Powell's. In anticipation of the imminent arrival of girls at Appleby, Catherine Raaflaub has been appointed Dean of Women. Catherine has extensive experience in counselling and teaching, and was most recently a member of the faculty at the Country Day School in King, Ontario where she taught Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Science." She has a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) from Western, a B.Ed. from Western and a B.A. (Mathematics) from York University. Her new teaching responsibilities include Mathematics courses at the Upper Two, Junior and Senior grade levels. Intramural sports, badminton in the Spring and board games round out her extracurricular commitments. A graduate of Havergal College in Toronto, Gale taught Math at the Bishop Strachan School for the past nine years. She was also involved in coaching several badminton, hockey and baseball teams. She spent several summers working as a science demonstrator and hostess with the Ontario Science Centre, a lifeguard with the Toronto City Parks and Recreation department, and a camp counsellor and canoe instructor with Camp Kawabi in Haliburton. Item consists of a colour photograph of new Mathematics and Computer Science teacher Peter Thompson. Note on verso: "Coming to us from a job in Cambridge, England is Peter Thompson. Peter is joining the faculty as a Mathematics and Computer Science teacher in the Senior School, and currently handles classes in Calculus, Math and Computer Science. He has both his Honours Bachelor of Science and B.Ed. from the University of Western Ontario. For the past two years, he has been teaching at the Lycee Cambridge in England, where he organized and ran the intramural sports programme. Prior to that, he had spent five years teaching Math and Computer Science and coaching soccer, alpine skiing and volleyball at high schools in Campbellford, Deep River and Toronto. Peter can expect to add some coaching to his list of activities at Appleby: so far, he has been recruited to help out with the second volleyball team and the intramural programme. He is also acting as faculty advisor for the school's student-run Amnesty International group, and the model building club. Travelling has been one of his favourite pastimes, and he has found his way through England, Scotland and much of continental Europe, as well as across Canada. Other hobbies include skiing, canoeing, hiking, photography and computer programming. He and his wife Jo-Anne live in Burlington with their two children, Allison and Andrew." The new books, called Spellbound!, The Danger Beneath and Earthwatch, are published by Oakville's Rubicon Publishing Ltd. Appleby parent Maggie Goh heads the company. Boyd, shown here discussing business with his editor Elizabeth Siegel, is currently working on another ambitious literary project: a trilogy set in medieval England, Niagara Falls in 1870 and Paris in 1940." File also includes the set-up programme package for 1989-1990 and two copies of the report of the Saturday Programme Committee from June 1989.

Item consists of a sound recording of an oral history interview between faculty member Mr. H.C. Hardwick who taught English and French from 1929 and 1964, and alumni's Randy Smye '63 and Michael DesRoches '62. They discuss life at Appleby College including quite a bit about corporal punishment and discipline.

It includes discussion of faculty member Mr. Colley and various incidents during World War 2. There is discussion about Mr. Wickens both as a teacher and later as a headmaster, life at Appleby during the Depression years and the economic difficulties the school faced; how Mr. Hardwick came to be at Appleby College as a languages teacher; how Mr. Whittington and Mr. Wickens oversaw the dramatic society.
Mr. Hardwick talks about the publication of his books as well as the school play 'How Lancelot came to Camelot'.
Other topics include: tug of war teams, inter-house battles, new gym, junior school, chapel - the opening and the organ, E.V. Brown and the building of his house; female staff including Miss James and Miss Niblett; founder Mr. Guest; the electrical system at the school, floods; facilities man Bert Halsey; different teachers and some of the stories about them and their personal lives; lists various early students and their personalities and how they were punished when they were bad.
