'Skin' Dewar and alumni Randy Smye '63 discussing life at Appleby College as an English teacher and football coach between 1934 and 1974. Topics discussed include the 1936 trip to Berlin Olympics; Weis Memorial window; Headmasters John Guest, Percival Wickens, Rev. Bell, staff including Mr. Colley, Alastair Walker; Mr. Whittington, Sgt. Sam Clarke, Miss Niblett and Miss James, Bruce Lockhart, John Page, Lesley Bott. Item consists of a sound recording of an oral history interview between faculty member Mr. H.C. Hardwick who taught English and French from 1929 and 1964, and alumni's Randy Smye '63 and Michael DesRoches '62. They discuss life at Appleby College including quite a bit about corporal punishment and discipline.

It includes discussion of faculty member Mr. Colley and various incidents during World War 2. There is discussion about Mr. Wickens both as a teacher and later as a headmaster, life at Appleby during the Depression years and the economic difficulties the school faced; how Mr. Hardwick came to be at Appleby College as a languages teacher; how Mr. Whittington and Mr. Wickens oversaw the dramatic society.
Mr. Hardwick talks about the publication of his books as well as the school play 'How Lancelot came to Camelot'.
Other topics include: tug of war teams, inter-house battles, new gym, junior school, chapel - the opening and the organ, E.V. Brown and the building of his house; female staff including Miss James and Miss Niblett; founder Mr. Guest; the electrical system at the school, floods; facilities man Bert Halsey; different teachers and some of the stories about them and their personal lives; lists various early students and their personalities and how they were punished when they were bad.

Grindlay, Edith

File consists of correspondence between Headmaster Mr. Guest and employee, Edith Grindlay. Edith was hired in 1911 to be both school nurse and school matron, and was one of the original employees when the school opened. Correspondence includes reference letters and her acceptance letter; letters regarding purchasing initial supplies and setting up the dormitories, kitchen and infirmary in the original School House (later Colley House) in 1911. Later letters include which supplies to order for the new Headmaster's house and the hospital, which were built in 1913. Supplies that are discussed include curtains, bedding, linens, flooring, paint, and dishes. There is also correspondence about Edith learning to type on a typewriter, canning supplies and canning the fruit on the property, as well as where to purchase and how much food should be purchased.

During World War 1 there is correspondence about rationing and the rising cost of food, as well as brief mentions of alumni who had gone off to war, including Massey, Crawley and Powell.

There is quite a lot of correspondence about the hiring and salary of female domestic staff including kitchen and dormitory cleaning staff. There is also some mention of the men on the Facilities team and the work they should be doing as well as some of their personal problems, including drinking.

There is also quite a lot of correspondence about supply orders and payments, with several receipts from Eatons, Singer Sewing Machine Company and others.

Throughout the letters there are brief mentions of early staff members including Mr. Colley, Mr. Powell and Mr. Whittington.

Edith worked for Appleby from 1911 until she was married in October 1920. She did come back to work for a short period of time in 1924 and there is one letter, possibly from her 1924 return which outlines what she will try to accomplish.

Series consists of textual records compiled by Stafford in relation to his time as a student at Appleby School and include the 1924 and 1930 Prospectus brochure, the admission letter dated July 9, 1924, the Annual Sports Day brochure which lists his dad, W.T. Marlatt as a prize presenter, newspaper clippings about the death of Headmaster Percival Wickens, the retirement of Headmaster Guest and a memorial clipping listing those alumni who had died during the World Wars. The series also includes a copy of the June 1961 Argus which includes a history of the school and a mention that Stafford's uncle (Cecil Marlatt) used to take the students out on his boat.

Fonds consists of four series; education of Wentworth’s schooldays at Appleby, Old Boys’ Association, correspondence and the Walker Family series, which consist of family heritage pieces related to Appleby College. Of note is a child’s table and chair set that was made by Appleby’s founder and Wentworth’s uncle, John Guest.
