1936 Summer Olympics Trip to England and Berlin, Germany

Sub-file consists of 1 photo album that contains 5 pages of the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Images include swimming events, the youth camp where the students stayed, track and field events, and the streets and countryside of Berlin. Commonwealth Service of Youth, Westminster Abbey

Item consists of a a 33 1/3 rpm mono sound recording of the Commonwealth Service of Youth at Westminster Abbey on June 7, 1953 for the Coronation of Elizabeth II.
Side one: Introduction by Major F.J. Ney. Fanfare by Trumpeters of the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. The National Anthem. The Bidding prayer by the Dean of Westminster. 'All People that on Earth do Dwell'. The Thanksgiving by the Precentor.

Commonwealth Youth Movement Coronation Programme

Item consists of a digital scan of the Commonwealth Youth Movement Coronation Programme for Canada. There are photographs of the Appleby College Coronation Choir, the Appleby College itinerary for the Coronation Choir as well as some advertisements listing the Appleby College Coronation Choir as performers.

Coronation Choir

Series consists of material related to Appleby's Coronation Choir and contains a travel diary, newspaper clippings, footage that Brad shot using his Brownie camera of choir members onboard the SS Empress of Australia, parts of the Coronation parade on Coronation Day and touring various sites throughout England. Other material includes a Commonwealth Youth Movement pin, record and photographs of the trip.

Coronation Choir

File consists of records pertaining to the Appleby College Coronation Choir. The school Chapel Choir, under the direction of Choir Master E. Leslie Bott, was invited to perform at the Commonwealth Youth Movement Service as part of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953. Appleby College was one of a select few Canadian groups invited to attend this event. In addition to performing at the June 7, 1953 Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey, which was recorded, the choir performed a total of nineteen full concerts during their six weeks in Great Britain.

In addition to this, they sang at Services in nine Parish Churches, performed in five Public Schools and made two appearances on the BBC. The Appleby College Coronation Choir performed at the Cathedrals of Winchester, Chichester, St. Mary's (Edinburgh), Yorkminster and St. Albans and also sang a special Service of Dedication for Commonwealth Youth - At St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on June 1st.

In between singing, the group was able to tour around England and Scotland, and were in the stands during the actual Coronation ceremony on June 2nd, 1953. The group was also invited to attend the Changing of the Guard ceremony in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on the day the Canadian Regiments took over.

Thirty years after the Choir performed, they held a reunion in 1983 at Appleby College and performed as a group once again.

Item consists of a letter written by E. Leslie Bott, the Appleby College Coronation Choir director, providing an overview of the itinerary and events that the Appleby College Coronation Choir participated in during their six week trip to England in April 1953.

Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to the Coronation ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 and includes two tickets to the ceremony and information on where to sit as well as souvenir books about the Coronation.

File consists of two newspaper clippings about the Appleby College Coronation Choir and the ship they travelled on. The one clipping includes a photograph of Edmund 'Brad' Brown.

Sub-file consists of newspaper clippings about the Appleby College Chapel Choir being chosen to perform in England as part of the Commonwealth Youth Movement celebrations for the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to the Appleby College Coronation Choir performing in England, as well as a few performances in Canada. It includes programmes, scripts for productions that the choir was part of, tickets to various concerts.

Sub-file includes the Coronation Programme for the Commonwealth Youth Movement listing all Canadian performers and includes photographs and a schedule of events, as well as a menu for the visit to Royal Festival Hall on June 3rd, 1953, the programme for Empire Youth Sunday on May 17, 1953 and the Saint Paul's Cathedral Empire Youth Service on May 17th, 1953.

Sub-file also includes postcards showing the different cathedrals and schools that the Appleby Coronation Choir performed at in England.

Robert Volterra at the University of Cambridge

Item consists of a colour photograph of Robert Volterra (class of 1983) (centre) with David Smith (class of 1953) (right) and David Smith's wife, Barbara Smith (left). David Smith and Barbara Smith visited Robert Volterra at the University of Cambridge in England, where he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Law. This event was described in The Appleby Quarterly (December 1994, vol. 16, no. 1).

Rugby

File consists of records pertaining to rugby at Appleby College and includes the 1983 New Zealand Tour booklet and the 1993 UK Tour booklet. Each booklet includes photographs and biographies of the players who went on tour, as well as brief histories of rugby.

Travel diary

File consists of a travel diary written by Brad Brown during his trip to England as part of the Appleby College Coronation Choir as well as his trip to the Near East with fellow student Bill Green and his family. He talks about life on the ship during their travel to England, singing and touring various sites in England as well as sightseeing in Beirut, Jerusalem and Barcelona. Brad later wrote an article for the June 1954 Argus Yearbook about his Near east trip. It can be found on page 56.

Travel Documents

Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to travelling to England for the Coronation and includes the Group Certificate of members of the Appleby College Chapel Choir which includes a photograph of each student as well as personal details. This item is RESTRICTED.

Sub-file consists of a railway ticket, the ship manifest/passenger list, postcards and documentation relating to the ships that the choir travelled on to and from England, 'Empress of Australia' and the 'Columbia'.

Sub-file also includes a theatre ticket, a day pass into Westminster Abbey, as well as permits for visiting Buckingham Palace.

Video of Appleby College Coronation Choir trip to England

Item consists of two silent movies taken by Brad Brown during his trip to England as part of the Appleby College Coronation Choir. The first movie includes images of the students onboard the SS Empress of Australia heading toward England. The second video consists of the students in England watching the Coronation parade and visiting sites in England. A third video of students during Sports Day at Appleby is included in the digital version (AV-15).
