Scope note(s)

  • The Classroom Building was built in memory of the twenty alumni who died in World War II. The Architects were Marani & Morris of Toronto and the contractors were W.H. Cooper Construction Company of Hamilton.The building officially opened on May 12, 1949 and featured classrooms, science lab, music room, study hall, junior and senior commons rooms, and offices. In 1956, the Memorial Entrance was added to include the Headmaster's Office and a library. In 1959, the east block of the classroom building opened to house the Junior School. In 2011-2012 a fundraising initiative (Centennial Memorial Classroom Project) was held to update and modernize the classrooms. The project was completed in 2014.

          Item consists of the 1960 Appleby College Prospectus brochure.

          The brochure includes an aerial photograph of the college campus, interior and exterior views of the chapel, science lab, classrooms, recreation room, wood working lab, dorm rooms, school plays, choir - including a mention of the choir at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, football, hockey and gymnastics, cadets - including a photograph of the group saluting Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh during their Canadian Tour in 1951, the library, Cub Scouts, Sports Day and Awards Day.

          The brochure also includes photographs and information on the new Memorial Classroom Building and the newly built gymnasium.

          The brochure describes the aims of the college, lists awards available for students, daily routine timeline, curriculum, rules and regulations as well as other information about the school.

          Item consists of the 1966 Appleby College Prospectus brochure. The one brochure has a loose copy of the Supplement to the Prospectus which outlines fees and rules and regulations, as well as an application form, medical history form and uniform listing.

          Item consists of a sound recording of an oral history interview between faculty member D.M. 'Skin' Dewar and alumni Randy Smye '63 discussing life at Appleby College as an English teacher and football coach between 1934 and 1974. Topics discussed include the 1936 trip to Berlin Olympics; Weis Memorial window; Headmasters John Guest, Percival Wickens, Rev. Bell, staff including Mr. Colley, Alastair Walker; Mr. Whittington, Sgt. Sam Clarke, Miss Niblett and Miss James, Bruce Lockhart, John Page, Lesley Bott. Subjects include football, chapel, covered rink, Brown House, electrical system on campus, buildings around campus, Town of Oakville, golf course on campus, carving roasts at dinner, The Depression, World War 2.           Item consists of a sound recording of an oral history interview between faculty member Mr. H.C. Hardwick who taught English and French from 1929 and 1964, and alumni's Randy Smye '63 and Michael DesRoches '62. They discuss life at Appleby College including quite a bit about corporal punishment and discipline.

          It includes discussion of faculty member Mr. Colley and various incidents during World War 2. There is discussion about Mr. Wickens both as a teacher and later as a headmaster, life at Appleby during the Depression years and the economic difficulties the school faced; how Mr. Hardwick came to be at Appleby College as a languages teacher; how Mr. Whittington and Mr. Wickens oversaw the dramatic society.
          Mr. Hardwick talks about the publication of his books as well as the school play 'How Lancelot came to Camelot'.
          Other topics include: tug of war teams, inter-house battles, new gym, junior school, chapel - the opening and the organ, E.V. Brown and the building of his house; female staff including Miss James and Miss Niblett; founder Mr. Guest; the electrical system at the school, floods; facilities man Bert Halsey; different teachers and some of the stories about them and their personal lives; lists various early students and their personalities and how they were punished when they were bad.
