Travel Documents

Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to travelling to England for the Coronation and includes the Group Certificate of members of the Appleby College Chapel Choir which includes a photograph of each student as well as personal details. This item is RESTRICTED.

Sub-file consists of a railway ticket, the ship manifest/passenger list, postcards and documentation relating to the ships that the choir travelled on to and from England, 'Empress of Australia' and the 'Columbia'.

Sub-file also includes a theatre ticket, a day pass into Westminster Abbey, as well as permits for visiting Buckingham Palace.

Reunion Material

Sub-file consists of correspondence regarding the reunion of the Coronation Choir in 1983 as well as the purchase and installation of the Coronation Choir stained glass window in the chapel.

Quarterly 2018 Spring

Item consists of the Spring 2018 edition of the Appleby Quarterly magazine. Performances

Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to the Appleby College Coronation Choir performing in England, as well as a few performances in Canada. It includes programmes, scripts for productions that the choir was part of, tickets to various concerts.

Sub-file includes the Coronation Programme for the Commonwealth Youth Movement listing all Canadian performers and includes photographs and a schedule of events, as well as a menu for the visit to Royal Festival Hall on June 3rd, 1953, the programme for Empire Youth Sunday on May 17, 1953 and the Saint Paul's Cathedral Empire Youth Service on May 17th, 1953.

Sub-file also includes postcards showing the different cathedrals and schools that the Appleby Coronation Choir performed at in England.

Sub-series consists of newspaper clippings about Appleby College and is divided into decades. It includes articles about Cadets, gymnastics, Sports Day, Closing Day, the Chapel, the death of Sir Edmund Walker - the co-founder of the school (oversized encapsulation), Track and Field, a fire at Appleby during the 1930's, the death of Samuel Clarke, the hanging of the new Canadian flag on campus, 55th anniversary of Appleby College, the retirement of Headmaster Dr. J.A.M. Bell, football, rugby, various guest speakers to the school.

Sub-series also includes an article by Wilder Breckenridge about what it was like at the school when it first opened in 1911; articles about the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the building campaign including a new hospital and library; the introduction of girls from St. Mildred's Lightbourn School participating in the school plays at Appleby beginning in 1971; and what is like at a private school. File consists of records pertaining to the Israel and Egypt choir tour in 1994 and includes travel and performance itinerary, costs of the trip and visitor information about Israel including a map.

European Choir Tour

File consists of records pertaining to the European Choir Tour in 1991 and includes a brochure about the choir group, Appleby Express programme for performance at The Oakville Centre featuring Maureen Forrester, photograph form, concert and travel itinerary, list of choir tour members and information about the trip, list of donors and supporters, and travel preparations and costs.

Empire Youth Sunday Programme

Item consists of a digital scan of the Empire Youth Sunday Programme held in honour of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Appleby College Coronation Choir is in the programme.

Correspondence

Sub-file consists of correspondence pertaining to the Appleby College Coronation Choir and includes information about the Coronation ceremony, congratulatory letters, thank you letters for various performances, and planning letters for the trip to England.

Sub-file consists of the final trip report written by Choirmaster E. Leslie Bott and outlines how the trip went and were the choir performed during their trip to England.

Coronation Memorabilia

Sub-file consists of documents pertaining to the Coronation ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 and includes two tickets to the ceremony and information on where to sit as well as souvenir books about the Coronation.

Coronation choir itinerary letter

Item consists of a letter written by E. Leslie Bott, the Appleby College Coronation Choir director, providing an overview of the itinerary and events that the Appleby College Coronation Choir participated in during their six week trip to England in April 1953.

Coronation Choir

File consists of records pertaining to the Appleby College Coronation Choir. The school Chapel Choir, under the direction of Choir Master E. Leslie Bott, was invited to perform at the Commonwealth Youth Movement Service as part of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953. Appleby College was one of a select few Canadian groups invited to attend this event. In addition to performing at the June 7, 1953 Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey, which was recorded, the choir performed a total of nineteen full concerts during their six weeks in Great Britain.

In addition to this, they sang at Services in nine Parish Churches, performed in five Public Schools and made two appearances on the BBC. The Appleby College Coronation Choir performed at the Cathedrals of Winchester, Chichester, St. Mary's (Edinburgh), Yorkminster and St. Albans and also sang a special Service of Dedication for Commonwealth Youth - At St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on June 1st.

In between singing, the group was able to tour around England and Scotland, and were in the stands during the actual Coronation ceremony on June 2nd, 1953. The group was also invited to attend the Changing of the Guard ceremony in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on the day the Canadian Regiments took over.

Thirty years after the Choir performed, they held a reunion in 1983 at Appleby College and performed as a group once again.

Bill Sefton Appleby Scrapbook

Series consists of a scrapbook of Appleby College material compiled by Bill Sefton. It includes correspondence from the Alumni Association about various fundraising initiatives, invitations to Alumni events, including the 50 year club, greeting cards, a report card from Easter 1932, John Bell Chapel service programs, correspondence with other alumni, Appleby College Old Boys Association membership cards, newspaper clippings about Hilda Chattaway include photographs of her grave and a letter explaining how to find the grave, invitation to the official opening of Colley House in 1990, newspaper clippings about Appleby events including the visit from Prince Andrew, the 1991 Tour of Appleby College choir to Europe, an article written by Bill about how he got his first job in 1937 at Loblaws and his career there. The scrapbook also includes 45 photographs (PH01-0135 - PH01-0178) of Appleby College and people associated with Appleby.
