James William "Bill" Sefton was born on October 25, 1915 to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sefton. He attended Appleby College from 1929 to 1932, and although he did not graduate here, he is considered to be part of the Class of 1935. While attending Appleby, Bill participated in soccer, Junior hockey, boxing, Cadets, badminton, cricket and was on the Third football team. He was confirmed at the John Bell Chapel in 1930.
Bill married Sarah Jardine Murray on April 3, 1941. They lived in Toronto and he worked as a truck driver for Loblaws. He was a supporter of Appleby College and attended many Alumni (Old Boys) events. He died on Friday January 5, 2007.

John was elected to Appleby College Board of Governors in 2001, and appointed Chairman the following year. John played a strong part in helping set capital projects priorities and fundraising initiatives (Promise of the Future campaign) that lead to the renewal of the J.S. Gairdner Arena, the building of the John Guest Student Commons, which includes the Samuel Academic Resource Centre and the Schlesinger Dining Hall.

John’s wife Kathy has been an instrumental member of the Parents’ Association and has held various titles from co-chair of the Auction Acquisitions Committee, member of the New Parents’ Committee, to co-chair of the Venetian Ball Gala Auction to name a few.

John serves as President of TD Waterhouse Canada Inc., and as President and Chief Executive Officer of TD AMERITRADE, Inc. (Alternate Name, TD Waterhouse Investor Services (Canada), Inc. and Green Line Investor Services, Inc.). He serves as an Executive Vice President of Discount Brokerage, Financial Planning and Institutional Services at Toronto-Dominion Bank. He served as an Executive Vice President of Discount Brokerage and Financial Planning of Wealth Management at Toronto-Dominion Bank. From 1995 to 1999, John served as President and Chief Operating Officer of TD AMERITRADE, Inc. since 1995 he served as Senior Vice President of TD Bank Financial Group. He joined TD Bank in 1981 as an International Trainee after earning an MBA at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has been a Vice Chairman and Director of TD Waterhouse Group Inc. since 1999.

In April 1997, John was honoured as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, recognizing his outstanding vision, leadership and innovation. He is active with Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, serving as a trustee and as a member of the Business School’s Advisory Board. He was former director of the YMCA of the Greater Toronto Area. In 2009, he was appointed Honorary Colonel of 437 Transport Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario.

John and Kathy have three children: Jamie ’02, Josh ’04, and Samuel ‘11.
